Way Back

Back before my maternal grandmother passed away, when I was still in high school, I accompanied my grandparents to town while they ran some errands. I always enjoyed our little outings, even if it didn't amount to much. I just like being around them. We had already gone to a few places that I don't quite recall, before arriving at the pharmacy. It was your typical, local, small town, family owned drug store on the corner. Nothing fancy with just about anything you could imagine you would need to take care of a cold or sprain. The layout barely made sense to anyone but the owners and their long time customers. While my grandfather scurried to the back to get a prescription refilled, my grandmother and I wander around a bit, before stopping in front of the magazines and paperback display. I checked out comic books and my grandmother, an avid reader of romance novels, took a glance at those. I was lost in comic book land, ogling the drawings of men in tights, with muscles and crotches bulging. I glanced around and saw my grandmother in front of the magazines a few feet from me. She was overlooking her normal fair of Family Circle, and Redbook, gazing across the top row where the adult mags were hidden from prying young eyes. I just kept looking to see what her reaction would be. Her eyes stopped searching and focused on one. She reached for it and pulled it from it's place amongst the others and proceeded to thumb through it. I was aghast. I'm sure my eyes were as big as saucers and my jaw was on the floor. I couldn't believe what she was doing! And so matter-of-factly too! I stepped closer, not wanting to miss the chance of seeing a penis myself. She noticed me standing near her, stilling flipping quickly through the pages, then said in frustration, "I thought he would be in here since he was on the cover." With that she placed the magazine back in it's rightful spot. I saw it was Playboy with Burt Reynolds on the cover. You just gotta love grandmothers.

They look like they have a spirit of good times and energy in their eyes. I can just see it all happening! How fun.
